AbstractThe differeantial cultural characteristics between South and North China offer us a unique perspective to study the micro effects of regional culture. In this paper, we investigate the effect of regional cultural differences on corporate innovation at regional and corporate levels from the dimensions of regional dialect, South-North culture and inter-cultural communications, and further examine its specific functional mechanisms from corporate governance perspective. Our empirical results show that regional dialect has a significant effect on corporate innovation and that corporations led by sorthern CEOs innovate more compared to corporations led by northern CEOs. Moreover, corporate governance significantly impacts the effect of reginal culture on corporate innovation activity and inter-regional cultural communication significantly affects corporate innovation. The conclusions not only highlight the importance of regional cultural and inter-regional cultural communications but also emphasize the role of corporate internal governance on innovative activity in Chinese listed corporations.
