AbstractThis paper tries to investigate influences of urban demonstration effect and sense of city identity on consumption of rural workers based on quantile regression method and survey data from 2009 to 2012 in Shanghai. The results indicate that incomes of rural workers increase rapidly while their average propensities to consume are still very low. Demonstration effect and city identity have significant positive influence on consumption of rural workers. The demonstration effect has larger margin contribution to the consumption of rural workers in the low level, and narrows differences of consumer behaviors between rural workers. Sense of city identity has greater influences on the consumption of rural workers in the high level, and enlarges differences of consumer behaviors between rural workers. Changes in consumption structures of rural workers reduce with increasing demonstration years. The influences of demonstration effect and city identity on consumption structures of rural workers are significantly distinct. The main policy implications are to highlight human-oriented as the core of new model of urbanization and accelerate integration of rural workers into urban society. Moreover, it is important to properly implement the urban demonstration effect of consumption to rural workers and improve consumption level of rural workers in order.
