AbstractThe existing literatures find that media coverage bias is a common phenomenon. Does media coverage bias exist in China? Based on manually collecting media coverage data of listed companies in China from 2000 to 2012, this paper proposes and then tests the Property Preference Hypothesis, Catering Hypothesis, Constrained Reporting Hypothesis and Advertising Hypothesis in media coverage. The empirical results show that media coverage bias does exist in China overall. Under the same conditions, the media tends to positively cover the state-owned enterprises, and the enterprises with more complex organizational structure and more advertising expenditure. We also find that marketization is helpful to solve the Property Preference problem in media coverage. Taking of the background of the media system of China, this paper has some realistic significance to the study of media governance in transition economies.
